The following
is from Ed directly, dated February 28, 2002
"(Worked from) 76-86 at WRKO, starting on weekends, ending up a couple years later
on mornings working with a whole slew of great people (Dale Dorman, Dennis
Jon Bailey, Tim Kelley, Charlie Van Dyke, etc.). Became News Director around
'80, I think. Was fortunate to be part of the transition to news talk which
saw a hungry, professional news operation get bigger and better. In '85
we swept the RTNDA regional awards (I'm not aware of anyone doing that anywhere
else in the country). I left in 1986 to join Charlie on mornings at KFYI
in Phoenix where I also worked with Tom Leykis."
"Was drafted by RKO General to WOR in late '87 to become news director here.
(Who could turn that down?) Eventually became PD then VP of Programming
and News. Had pretty good run but longed to get back on the air full time
and went back to KFYI in '95 after a short stint anchoring at 1010 WINS
and the ABC Network to do mornings and be PD and ND (I was doing the work
of three men: Larry, Moe and Curly!). Stayed with the station thru the sale
to Chancellor (aka AMFM) and merger with Clear Channel and was invited back
to WOR to do mornings, replacing John Gambling and becoming the first non-Gambling
to host mornings in 75 years. (Again, who could turn that down). That was
in late 2000. Still here. Glad to be."
"I never had more fun in the business than I did at the Big 68. In fact,
I don't think any of us on the air there had similarly wonderful experiences
before or after."
An update from Ed, dated August 9,
2005:
"I came to WRKO in 1976 from WAAB in Worcester and the U.S. Navy and left in 86
to go to KFYI in Phoenix. I am now at WOR in New York as host of the WOR
Morning Show with Ed Walsh and have been here since 2000, having worked
here earlier as V.P. News and Programming from 1987 to 1994 (and back to
KFYI in the interim). I'm definitely NOT retired!"
