An import from Miami's legendary Top 40 WQAM/560, Jon Powers lent his smooth, deep voice to WRKO as the station's second overnight jock, in July 1967. Before that, the station had run jock-less overnight. (Dick Burch, the original all-nighter, had quit during the strike at WRKO in April of 1967.) When Powers left WRKO some time in 1969, he was replaced by Mark Rivers.

In the 1960s, Jon Powers worked at Lakeland, Florida's WONN/1230, and then at WFLA/970 in Tampa as the morning DJ in 1965. Leaving WRKO in mid- 1969, Powers returned to Tampa Bay as a newsman at then-Top 40 WLCY. Later, he did the news at WNSI, WFLA and finally as a newsman at Q105 (WRBQ) / Tampa.. He won numerous awards for his work in broadcasting.

Later, Powers became Director of Public Information for the Pasco, Florida Sheriff's Office.
