Dick Burch ―  Overnight Jock  #1 ―  March, 1967

Airchecks Photos Timeline

Dick "Buffalo" Birch's claim to fame is that while he was hired as one of the very first WRKO jocks, he did just ONE show!

The story goes that the station first ran jock-less overnight, awaiting the arrival of Burch. When Burch finally arrived and kicked off the new station as WRKO, at midnight. However, the famous strike began two weeks into the first month of WRKO, and Burch reportedly couldn't afford to wait out the strike (you don't get paid while you're striking), and so he moved on. (Ironically, Burch's previous position was at RKO General's WOR-FM, where he was the station's first morning-drive personality at the new album-rock station)

When I found him (by phone) in 1999, Dick was living in California.
